Positive news for squash in Lichfield ...

We are delighted to share that Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet has just this evening approved a recommendation to allocate £13,000 of Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy funding to Lichfield Squash Club towards a squash court refurbishment project at King Edward VI School Sports Centre.

The decision remains subject to the formal call-in period and grant agreement process, so there are still some important steps to complete before everything is finally confirmed. However, this is a very positive development for the club and for squash in Lichfield.

The proposed project is intended to improve and protect the two squash courts at King Edward VI School, which are now the only remaining squash courts in Lichfield following the loss of provision at Friary Grange.

The project includes:

  • refurbishment of the squash court walls and playing surfaces;
  • improvements to the spectator/viewing area behind the courts;
  • protective floor covering to help safeguard the courts during school exams and other non-squash use;
  • improved storage for coaching equipment, club equipment and floor protection;
  • improvements to the corridor/access area to make the route to the courts more welcoming and visible.

The Council’s Cabinet report specifically recognised the demand for the courts following the loss of the Friary Grange courts, and noted that these are now the only remaining courts in Lichfield.

We are very grateful to Lichfield District Council, King Edward VI School, England Squash and everyone who has supported the bid.

A lot of work has gone into getting the project to this stage. We now look forward to working with the school and partners on the next steps.

We look forward to updating you further about these exciting plans.

Club Chairman
